mystery of romcacheimages
MoneyManC4 wrote on romcache images in the hacking NG...
You can also access [them] using:
/romcache/plus.gif
http://www.romcache.com/romcache/plus.gif http://www.dog.com/romcache/plus.gif http://www.cat.com/romcache/plus.gif http://www.amazing.com/romcache/plus.gif http://www.andthelistgoeson.com/romcache/plus.gif
I've long suspected that all the romcache images are the same.... regardless if it's
wtv-head-waiter:/romcache/webtvlogojewel.gif wtv-home:/romcache/webtvlogojewel.gif wtv-woofwoof:/romcache/webtvlogojewel.gif wtv-mail:/romcache/webtvlogojewel.gif
It's difficult to imagine why a romcache image would be on a server... as would seem to be the case judging from the URL.... or the fact that we can put almost any web prefex in front of it. But it also says something about the browser that it ignores the service prefix and just gets the image from rom.

Re: ROMCACHE TEST
An image of the community gif. What are you trying to prove anyways? That romchache/commuity.gif works in every URL?

Re: ROMCACHE TEST
This is something salad discovered. It's an extension of what we already know: that romcache images can appear to be on sites where we know they are not.
In this case the REAL image is being ignored because the box is being faked-out and showing the little community guys.

Re: ROMCACHE TEST
Looks to me like you were able to transload the community gif. It's the one with three people standing in a triangular form.

Re: ROMCACHE TEST
ROMCACHE files can be used with just about any service (ie: http://www.anglefire.com/romcache/Community.gif) but what I didn't know is it could override an existing file. But as I had learned, the Community.gif ulTRAX had linked to was not a TL'd Community.gif, it was in fact a picture of Resident Evil's Jill.

Interesting. The Subdirectory is fooling the browser. By the Image beng named community.gif and the subdirectory being named romcache it makes the browser ignore the ACTUAL image and dislay the 3 little guys. That image is ACTUALLY a image of a girl. :)
T-Load his image and see what shows up.
LOL
http://rupaul.webprovider.com/DELETEME.gif ^^ That is what the image REALLY is ^^
or just backtrack to Ultraxs' Subdirectory.

The other interesting thing...
Go to this url...but first notice there is NO "romcache" in the addy. Go to the page and then directly to a site that will give you the referrer of the page below (mad rabbit, starblvd, etc). What did you see as the referrer? : )
https://www.angelfire.com/ri2/IllusionzZ/test.gif
I have tried to see if I could break down the jibberish-looking code to pinpoint the culprit, but already being in cache,I get false data. lol

Re: The other interesting thing...
It will also come up as 'hidden' with romcache/blah.gif,too. Hmmm. This cancels out some preliminary ideas I had about getting 'hidden' as referrer since last upgrade. Any thoughts?

I never see the dead but I know they are there because of that creepy sensation on the back of my neck. That's them. ;-)

Re: The other interesting thing...
VERY interesting indeed. Madrabbit shows the PREVIOUS referrer each time. For example, clicking the link in your post takes me to a, note this, blank image, and going directly to a page w/referrer shows wtv-news:/news?group=alt.discuss.webtv.hacking&article=57333. I've never heard of anyone doing this nor have I tried it. It's a good thing that ulTRAX brought this back up. Also, sourcing the gif file itself (test.gif) gives jibberish as any image should, yet I compared it to a few romcache images (because of the topic of this thread, of course) and the third source I tried, of WebTVLogoJewel.gif, seemed very similar. Notice "Artemis" in the "test.gif" sourcecode. (”!) ....anyone have other observations or differences from my results? I still have not updated to the "hidden" downgrade so I obviously have different results from users that have accepted the upgrade,

Re: The other interesting CORRECTION
I just double-checked and it had barely any similarity to the WebTVLogoJewel sourcecode. My bad. Frank apparently modified the gif source code...hmm, Frank, did you insert the "artemis" in there? I don't see it on any romcache gif and all images have jibberish as their source code. I dont know why I could've thought for one second it was an unmodified gif source when I saw the word.

Re: The other interesting
No, I didnt edit the file that I posted previously. I made copies and edited them but not the original. And no,I didnt add 'Artemis' to it...it was already there. I aint even sure what that is a gif of...when I was discussing this whole subject with ulTRAX last night,he sent me a test gif,I went to validate it and thats when all this talk began. The gif above is from transloading the test.gif ulTRAX sent me.LOL Very interesting topic here, no doubt. : )

Re: The other interesting CORRECTION
You don't have to do much to screw up gif code. Convert it to txt [in a web page directory]... then confirm you want to use that mush of alt characters.... and it's worthless [when you try to view it]. Seems the gif code can't be converted by our browser.... so if we "confirm" the alt characters are the gif... we're ruining it.

Holy Shit: selective romcache deletion?
This is not a big deal but not something I thought WTV could do.
In the past few days out HomePages have changed. Since, at least in my case, the HomePage Top was a romcache image... and we had not found the new romcache image in the image directory... I wondered where TF it came from.
Well today I tried to access that old romcache HomePageTop image and it's gone!
It's also gone from
https://members.tripod.com/~ulTRICK/fileromcache2.html... it was in the
first section.
I hav not done any detailed comparisons of my old directory and what I have now but I can only assume that as part of last night's TV listing download... WNI selectively deleted the old romcache image and inserted a new one.
This process would be EXTREMEMLY interesting to observe using the Autohack... if you get my drift.
