The POWER-OFF codes are designed to allow access to certain box utilities and info while the box is off-line. Since these Power-off codes access pages which obviously are not being downloaded from the web, they must be in the box's rom.
These pages belong to the FILE://ROM/HTMLS/XXXXX group and can be accessed using an Access Tool and be stored in FAVs.
Both the PO Codes and the ROM pages are part of the Client software. Therefore WTV can create or delete them with a client upgrade... though it's inclear whether WNI deleted the PO Code itself, or just the function. The question arises whether PO Codes are "hard-wired" into the box. There are several examples to ponder.
First, the Tourist PO Code is an example where the PO Code still works but the client:tourist command has been removed. Another example is the 07081969 Code which seems is used to Force Upgrades on Classics.. yet the light still blink on a Plus1.
Some PO Codes are included which seem to have no discernable purpose... beyond making the box's light's blink. It can only be assumed they once worked... or work on a different box or build.
To use the PO Codes:
1: Make sure box is powered off
2: Hit OPTIONS a few times.
3: Enter PO Code.
4: Look to see if the lights flash on the Box. If not return to step #2.
5: Power on. Given the nature of the code you will either have deleted or reset some box data, or be taken to a page.

I need better explanations for the DP codes. Also I need Grim's delete ROM cache code which I can't find. Also... any other codes.... even if all they do is make the lights flash. I finally had to blast the NVRam to get rid of it. Anyone have different experiences? For those of you who are on 2.2.2 it will still work. As always when I post this code, I don't advise using it. It wipes all "un-necessary" files off your HD including all demos, most tvhtml pages, etc. and clears all but a few images in ROMCache (or is it ROM???). All the ROM and TVHTML images/pages come back after you download your TV listings the next time then. For someone on 2.2.2 it might be interesting to use it and visit file://romcache/ to see what's left. I know alot of images were wiped out because when I first used it, most images on wtv-pages didn't show up until after I had downloaded my listings. I think 44 was tech info and 33 was check mail, but I can't remember. They only lasted during the 1.1 (and maybe 1.2) Classic builds. PO-32768 was the only savior,but even then I believe ya still were taken to the options page of "use webtv or isp", and then click on one. I think you could have just did PO-217 and clicked on "use webtv" also. Group: alt.discuss.webtv.hacking Date: Thu, Apr 13, 2000, 4:24pm From: GrimIo@webtv.net (grim e-i-e-i-o) A note about 8675309, Boot/M-B and mail ulTRAX, I think you may want to note that the 8675309 (Jenny) poweroff code returns the box to it's Boot ROM, the second build loaded on our box enabling the Mini-Browser. For those of you who don't know, currently you have two builds loaded into your box, your current build that you should be on now, and the Boot ROM. The Boot ROM is basically a highly disected version of 2.1 with no JS capabilities and such. I have pictures taken last December of it at my Secret Pic Center. At the time the pass was "continue" (cracked by Reamer) and a few weeks before that it was "microsoft" cracked by someone going by the name of "David." If some of you've ever tried to download a Boot ROM you'd get the error, "Boot ROMs must be downloaded from the mini-browser". Just to let you all know, that is total BS because when Reamer cracked the pass I tried 'em all with no success. There is one build that I wish did work from there though, hehe. To see what your Boot ROM is and/or looks like: 1. Power off code 8675309 2. Power off code 411 or 217 Also, ulTRAX, you may want to note that 8675309 sometimes returns a person to the "checking for mail" screen. I have almost no clue why but I've had it happen numerous times. I think it's because of a few other poweroff codes that that I've used before it, but I'm not sure. It always happened though when I've used 8675309 **POWEROFF CODE** 8675309. I just can't remember what that middle poweroff code was, I know it was a well known one though that you have on your list. I'm not the only one that's had this happen, I know it's happened to Reamer too. The classic would have been 1.3 at that time. I propose we call WebTV acting like confused users. Here's a few story ideas: 1. I have to be forced an upgrade every time I turn my WebTV on, what do I do? 2. I can never connect to WebTV because everytime I connect, I start to dial toll free, what do I do? 3. When I poweron a split second later, I automatically power off, what do I do? 4. Everytime I try to download TV listings, about half way through I get an error and it quits downloading, what do I do? 5. I just got my phone bill and it was over $400. It said my WebTV kept dialing California, this is an outrage, what do I do? 6. When I turn my WebTV on, I start to dial toll free and get a "TellyScript error", what's that and what do I do? 7. Everytime I turn my unit on, it says "checking for mail" and afterwards shuts off, why does it do this and what do I do? 8. When I turn my WebTV off, it can sometimes take up to 45 minutes for the little green light to stop blinking. It used to only take about 3 minutes. What do I do? Use the above and post your results (I'm sure most of you should know what and what not to post) or come up with your own. After the test go though the entire browser and not what's changed,,, then restore each setting and try again. Otherwise we may look at one effect and think it's the only one when there may be several.... or think a PO Code had an effect when it's leftover from the last test.
